For "international " type boat comps, not that I have fished them for years, I used 11 -11ft 3" #6 rods. That way you can fish 3 or 4 flies at a good spacing so that you dont have to stand on the seat to land a fish on the point!

I use the following:
Stillwater
Sage XP 9'6" #7 Bloke XL50 9' #7 Sage RPL 11'3" #6/7 (loch style)
I lent my Bloke rod to the Irish team who temporarily lost their rods en route to Sweden for the 2004 European Championships and some of the team felt that it was the best rod they had ever used.
Rivers:
Winston LT 8'9" #5 Temple Fork TiCR 9' #4 Snowbee 8'6" #5/6 Fulling Mill Gold 10' #6
One interesting thing is that in the 2003 World Championships in the Spanish Pyrenees the Spanish, French and Italian teams made good use of silk lines for extreme care in presentation and all of my river gear above was a bit on the heavy side.
I only really fish rivers or FIPs Mouche events as I'm not a great fan of pulling for rainbows and even if the competition is on a wild brown water the qualifying is usually on rainbow fisheries.

I find that the best rod for loch style competition work is the 10¡¦ Loomis GLX for a seven wgt. I know it is an expensive bit of gear but it handles all the lines really well from the floater to the DI8. I have been in comps where my boat partner has stripped down a rod and set up another when changing lines. Way to much hassle. ƒº

A rod for non competitions can be set down during the day for a coffee , smoke , sandwich etc.
A competition rod is stuck in the hand all day and never stops.
