Does anyone know where in the UK I can purchase Wapsi poly yarn used for the post of Hans's Klinkhamer? I've done the search engine thing but nothing shows up! Also, assuming it comes in colours other than white, has anyone found trout "picky" as to the colour used?

Hmm... poly yarn... would that be polypropylene yarn?
If so, veniards also sell it andI know for a fact that Sharpes of Aberdeen had some in stock about a week ago as I sw it while rummaging around in their fly tying section. The veniards stuff is very fine, whereas some of the others are a little coarser in texture - both make an excellent wing post, but it's possible the finer texture holds more water. It's what I use for my parachute and para-loop flies at any rate.
Give Hughie a call on 020 7258 1233, I'm sure he can help you.
Cheers,

The best post (imho) is made using turkey flats as recommended by A.K.Best. You can have it in any colour, it sit up nice and stiff both when you tie in the hackle & when it's on the water and it stands up to sharp teeth. I'm a convert. Try it and see. Rod.

IMHO the best Poly Yarn for Klinkhamers is Niche Products own "Siliconised Polypropylene Yarn" is comes in white, grey dun and a very dark brown (almost black), I find the white and grey dun colour colour covers most situations - but if you want a brighter post try TMC Aero Wing in Pink Niche can be contacted via their website at: www.nicheflytying.com or better still phone them on 01245 442041 Goodluck - wildtrout PS... not linked in any way, just one satisfied customer

I'd second wild trout's suggestion. Niche Products are very helpful on the phone and have a small but excellent brochure with quality stock. Quick delivery times (other than the PO situation).

Erm I noticed that the core of some of my mylar tubing was made with something very akin to Poly yarn (some of it had a rope core though).
It was the same stuff as is apparently used on the Klinks I have bought in the past (would tie them if I knew how) and also the breathing filaments on epoxy buzzer patterns.
Kind of a two-in-one.
I think it was Veniards lazer mylar tubing rather than the stuff I bought from John Norris.

Bought some pink Wapsi from the 'ansome one down York Street. It may only be a small shop but at least the owner will speak to you even if you are only spending a few quid. Unlike them money grabbing biffs down Pa......... another part of London, who won't even acknowledge you unless you're spending hundreds of pounds on a Sage or similar outfit............Yes, you've guessed right, I don't like them, support your local independent dealer - he'll always look after you. Getting back to the matter in hand - I've found the pink Wapsi to do the job, no complaints about it.

Loon Strike-Out, indicator yarn in fluorescent orange or yellow. Cut an inch off, unravel and split it.

Lakefisher The Polypropylene Floating Yarn sold by Glasgow Angling Centre is WASPI Poly Yarn www.fishingmegastore.com/acatalog/Synthetics.htmlBut Like Wildtrout & Richardj, I'd also ecommend the Niche Products own "Siliconised Polypropylene Yarn instead. Not available in so many colours but much better than the WASPI, veniards or lureflash stuff. Lureflash Antron Yarn is also very good. I treat it with watershed to stop it getting waterlogged. IanH

Hi, I have never noticed a descrimnation in colour exhibited by the trout. I actually use bright orange wool for sight indicator and either yellow or orange foam for the post.
Let me explain. Cut two matchstick sized pieces, one each, of wool and foam. Run your thread down the hook and tie in body. Then loop the wool first, in a letter v, with the shank of the hook in the bottom of the v and the uprights vertical. Next loop in the foam. Run the thread horitontally around the post.
The foam keeps everything stiff and upright (no viagra needed here). Tie in the hackle horizontally and wind on as many turns as you require. Tie off and then trim the foam close. The wool or yarn stands out above the small foam post. This process has two effects. Gives additonal bouyancy and provides a small under thorax.
It makes the tying of this fly considerably easier.

I also use the Niche Products siliconised polypropylene yarn and would heartily recommend it. It also makes great breathers on Shipman's Buzzers. The white is highly visible in many light conditions. www.nicheflytying.com phone 01245 442041 (not connected with them in any way)
