20-05-04 An update of catches taken from www.tynefishing.comBywell Syndicate has now topped the ton with 104 fish recorded so far this season. It was that man Ian Shuttleworth of Stanhope who took the 100th fish of the season as well as the 50th and the first. Shuttleworth landed three salmon at the weekend including a 12lber and fish of 11lb and 9lb all on small Cascade Shrimp flies. John Nicholson of Spennymor landed a 9lb salmon on a Cascade while John Little made up for losing two good fish on fly by catching a 12lber bearing long tailed sea-lice and then another fish of 9lb on a tiny tube fly. Anthony Luke of Harrogate had a fish of 7lb 8oz and followed it by landing one of 10lb also on a tiny size 16 fly while fishing near the Church. Out on Tyneside Anglers Syndicate Waters Nick Chilton of Durham had a cracking fish estimated at 19lb to a Black and Gold Flying C from Stanley Burn at Wylam. Another member returned a fish of around 9lb also spinning. Out on TAS Border fishing Peter Catchpole had a sea-liced fish of 10lb while Mr Mitchinson had one of 7lb 8oz on fly. We really need another big spate now to get the next batch of fish into the North Tyne and with Riverdale anglers arriving in a few days prospects don't look too good.......

26-05-04 An update of catches from www.tynefishing.com/ Hotel resident Tim Smith landed a 12lb salmon in the tail of the island pool at Chester's over the weekend. Prospects looked hopeless as the water was very, very low as it has been for a while and unfortunately still is. However Tim fishing with an 11" 8 rod, 9lb line and a size 14 stoats tails treble did beat the odds. I gave him a call this evening to congratulate him and to my surprise he revealed that he runs a magazine, 'Today's Fly Fisher'. Not only did Tim catch but he was also full of praise for Robert the gillie, Chester's beat and of course Riverdale Hall Hotel. Catches have again been low and May, it is fair to say it has been a bad month, but a steady week was had on the lower Tyne again with the following catches. The silver stoat seems to be flavour of the week with Steven Hutchinson from Callerton Village landing 13lb & 17lb salmon as well as an 8lb sea trout all to a this popular fly. Peter Fitzpatrick from Rowlands Gylle had an 11lb salmon to a spinner and one chap who wishes to remain anonymous lost 3 fish around the 20lb mark all to a meps and all after about 20 minutes!.

04-06-04 An update of catches from www.tynefishing.com/ There has been lots of rain in the West and indeed it rained heavily overnight in Bellingham but unfortunately not enough to bring on a spate The South Tyne has risen slightly and i am told that fish can be seen running at night in Wylam but they are unlikely to reach the beats of Riverdale Hall. Chester's will again be the most likely place to have success and with hotel regular Chris Buttress and friend fishing the lower beat tomorrow, there may be news to come!. Lower downstream at Stanley Burn on the main Tyne Dougie Thompson took two sea trout of 5lb and 7lb and we can expect more and more sea trout from now onwards. The sea trout will of course run on low water which is a good job as Kielder are releasing a base flow of 1.5cmps until further notice.

11-06-04 An update of information taken from www.tynefishing.com/ There was a 10lb salmon taken today on the upper beat at Chester's as it happens in the plain trees runner but the river is in a terribly low condition. To make matters worse i am told that water is being pumped out of the river at Barrasford, Riding Mill and Ovingham to supply local reservoirs. And as if that is not bad enough the E.A. must surely be worried about fish deaths again this year as very low tides are due this weekend, which will bring fish in but they are unlikely to go back out to sea. There are fish plodding through even though the river is showing it's bones but where do they all go? Nicky Chilton had an 8lb salmon at Wylam on a black and gold flying c and apparently lost 7 fish the previous week. Peter Fitzpatrick from Rowlands Gill had a 10lb salmon low down the main Tyne as did Dave Simpson but his fish was 15lb. A 4lb 8oz wild brown trout has been recorded from the T.A.S. water at Wylam in the pumphouse pool; it was landed by mark Oughtred and maybe there could be more brownie sport as we are seeing some good May fly hatches.

An update of reported catches taken from a local press report :
The bad news for salmon anglers is that there have already been some salmon deaths at Wylam.
The recent hot weather and persistently low river levels have brought the fish deaths forward a month, as they normally start in July. The river has been desperately low for weeks now and precious little water has been given to the river from Kielder Water, which is around 90% full.
With abstraction at Barrasford, Riding Mill and Ovingham, there is not much water reaching the estuary, where oxygen levels have dropped. Substantial rainfall or releases from Kielder are required to improve this situation.
Catches on the River Tyne include salmon of 13lb and 10lb for Dave Simpson on a small Rapalla. Dougie Thompson of Rowlands Gill caught a fine salmon of 18lb and a 9lb sea-trout from the lower Tyne. Steven Hutchinson of Callerton Village took a sea-trout of 8lb on a No 1 Mepps. All of these fish were caught on North Eastern Railways AC fishing.

The river has been running a little higher over the last couple of days which seems to have got some fish moving.
Graham Heaney had a fish this morning just above Wylam bridge and I also witnessed a British Rail AC member take one and lose one from Wylam Bridge pool.
There is supposed to be more unsettled wet weather due this week so hopefully it could be a good week on the river.

30-06-04 An update of information taken from www.tynefishing.com/ At last some heavy rain and a fairly decent spate to boot, add to this an increased flow of 4cmps from kielder until further notice and we have some good fishing conditions. The problem is that the river has been so low for so long that the majority of the fish are still in the mid-lower parts of the North tyne. I had a look at the Hexham weir on Friday and there were a substantial amount of fish coming over most of which were clean salmon. At Chester's there are plenty of fish backed up behind the weir and there should be some good catches there this week. I did manage to wet a line for a couple of hours on Friday night at Redeswood where i spotted about half a dozen salmon two of which were running fish. I did move a fish but nothing caught, i am thinking i should have fished the Rede as it was in superb shape. We did have success on Friday though from Dr Craig who landed a 10lb salmon from the Mill pool on Newton beat. Dr Craig reported seeing other fish on the beat too and for those of you who are unfamiliar with the location of Newton beat, it is about a mile above Riverdale Hall and 3-4 miles above Redeswood. I have some great news for those of you who have found it hard to get fishing in September and October. I can now announce that a new beat is available from Riverdale Hall called Tarset. Those of you who have been regulars at Riverdale over the years will know the beat and it has become available now and then, it is now available on a more permanent basis. It is a two rod beat which starts at the junction of the Tarset burn and carries on downstream for about a mile past the mouth of the Churden burn and opposite Snabdough. there is some easy wading at the top of the beat where the river thins into a deep channel where fish can be picked up easily when water conditions are good in September and October. Although the beat is quite long it is restricted to two rods as some of the bank is not accessible due to trees. The cost per rod per day is £40 in September and October. Further downstream on the Main Tyne, Bywell syndicate continues to due well with over 130 salmon being taken for the season so far. Brian Hankin from Bishop Auckland had a 10lb salmon in the pipeline pool, John Richardson from Spennymoor had a 15lb salmon to the fly at lower Church. Aiden Pollard also at pipeline had an 8lb fish to a copper ally's and George Nicholson from Wallsend had a 9 pounder to a number 2 meps. Ian Henderson of corbridge also had a 9lb salmon and the first fish killed at Bywell this year was a 16lb 12oz salmon landed by Kevin thingy on a size 10 ally's. Kevin also returned two sea trout of 6lb & 10lb. Keith Calder of Teesdale also had two 10lb salmon both to an ally's. So it seems like the old faithful ally's shrimp is the hot fly to be using at the moment and with 752 fish recorded at the Riding Mill fish pass in May we are in for some summer sport. Bring on the sea trout!....

03-07-04 An update on river levels. The main Tyne at Bywell is reported to be at 0.01mts above summer level and steady. The North Tyne is 0.01mts below summer level and steady. The South Tyne is 0.06mts above summer level and steady. The Kielder release flow has been 1.32 Cubic mts per second however this is due to be increased to 10.3 cubic mts per second from 07.30am this morning and is rumoured to be going to last three days. This increase in Kielder flow will give a rise in water today on the North Tyne and should be down to the lower Tyne tomorrow. Best get them rods out again

04-07-04 Another update on river levels as of this morning showing the effect of the kielder release and yesterdays rainfall: The main Tyne at Bywell is reported to be at 1.01mts above summer level and rising quickly. The North Tyne is 0.89mts above summer level and rising quickly. The South Tyne is 0.32mts above summer level and steady. The above photo was taken yesterday from the 'Points' Bridge at Wylam and looks up onto the bottom end of the Northumbrian Anglers Federation water at Hagg Bank.

05-07-04 An update of information taken from www.tynefishing.com/ Anyone want some good summer salmon & sea trout fishing? Well drop everything and get yourself up to Northumberland this week. On Friday & Saturday the water was too high and coloured to fish however on Sunday the river had cleared and although still high, anything above the Rede would have fished well. I was recovering from my brother's wedding and could not face the river but i feel sure that throughout the week i will be hearing of many North Tyne catches. A release of 10cmps from Kielder started at 7.30am on Saturday and is due to continue until 7.30am on Tuesday. This extra water will make for near perfect Redeswood fishing and guess what? There is no-one booked to fish!.. I would forget about Chester's until Wednesday as i fear it may be too high but i would expect the beat to be fishing well from Wednesday and throughout the weekend. Anyone wishing to have some sport this week should call me on my mobile on 07791101553, i have been turning a lot of you away for the last month but now is the time to drop everything. Allan Fidling a regular to Riverdale took a cracking 11lb salmon on Chesters last Wednesday in the plain trees runner to a size 12 home made fly. He reported seeing two other fish taken from the beat on monday also. I have had other unconfirmed reports of catches, one from the just above tarset and two witnessed by a friend just below the entrance of the Alan to the South Tyne. Further downstream at Bywell Peter MacConway from Gosforth had a 16lb salmon, George Nicholson had two of 9lb & 11lb and Brian Hankin of Bishop Aukland had a 5lb 8oz sea trout. Still at Bywell, Bernard Lynch had a 10 pounder, Kevin Disk had a 13lb salmon and a 7lb sea trout both to the fly and Norman Pattinson had a 20lb salmon in the Island pool. Colin Wilkinson had a 12lb fish and Jonathan Lee from Darlington had a cracking day with two salmon at 17lb and a 8lb 8oz sea trout all his fish were sea louced. Richard Armstrong had a 10lb salmon to the fly and John Little had a 9lb salmon to the ever popular cascade fly (pictured above). Back on the North Tyne, Ian Shuttleworth had an 11lb salmon near Wark and David Carrick had 12lb salmon to a orange DNC shrimp pattern. On the South Tyne Keith Robinson took an 11lb salmon to a fly. -------------------------------------------------------------------- I hope some of you on the forum are finding this thread interesting and hopefully considering giving the Tyne a go sometime. If anyone else on the forum would like to post some reports from other areas of the Tyne system then please do.
