26-03-04 Once again thanks to Jonathan at www.tynefishing.com/Heavy rain has made the main Tyne un-fishable for most of the week and as a result catches are down. Bywell's total is now at 36 with four more declared catches this week Ron Hebbitch landed two salmon at the beeches pool one of 14lb the other 17lb, both to the fly. Joanne Downs had nice sea trout of 5lb at Broomhaugh, Colin Wilkinson had a 10lb salmon to a devon in the beeches. Further upstream Steven Hutchinson from Callerton Village had two salmon at Widehaugh below Hexham one of 10lb the other 14lb. The 14lb fish had a seal bite and both were caught on an Atlantic silver spoon. Below Corbridge and just above Styford John Gemingham of Teeside had a 10 pounder to a yellow tube. A Riverdale angler fishing last Friday at Bywell reported spotting 15 running fish and on Sunday again i heard a whisper of a good run coming through. Believe it or not but i have also heard of a run of sea trout at Haltwhistle on the South Tyne. I popped down to the Redeswood beat on Monday to fish the Rede part but to no avail. The Rede was perfect and i fished the three pools above the Redesmouth bridge and then the mouth looking down onto the junction on Rede/North Tyne. I did not see a fish but did notice the North Tyne was rising so when i returned home i rang the dam release line. There is a constant flow of 15cmps until further notice which will guarantee a light scattering of fish right through the North Tyne. Especially as the release is on the back of a spate and there is more rain to come. I think the rod may have to come out again this weekend.....

31-03-04 Once again thanks to Jonathan at www.tynefishing.com/Not many catches have been reported this week although Riverdale regular Doug Beveridge did get his second salmon of the year at Broomhaugh. The 15 pounder took a size 8 cascade, treble on floating line. At Farnleigh Stuart Rose from Leeds had a 7lb salmon which was covered in sea louse. Further upstream just below the bridge at Corbridge 2 salmon were taken and another at Corbridge of 8lb, the anglers wish to remain anonymous. Again at Corbridge Tom Robinson had a 9lb salmon and there was another taken that day. Meanwhile in the bridge pool at Hexham Peter Graham had a 9lb salmon to a tube. There has been a salmon landed at Chollerford just above Chesters on the North Tyne so anyone considering a trip to fish at Chesters this spring now is the time to book. Kielder is still releasing 15cmps until further notice and i am sure if more people bothered to get their rods out on the North Tyne, in spring then more reports of catches would be coming in. I was at Redeswood yesterday afternoon where conditions were very good however i knew i wasn't going to catch when i stood watching a huge dog otter playing in the junction pool for about 15 minutes. I have now had confirmed reports that their has been a run of sea trout on the south Tyne which doesn't surprise me as there has been plenty of water in the river. This season is looking like it may be a belter with a wet summer predicted and i advise anyone who has not yet booked there trip up north this Autunm as yet, to get a move on. I have two rods available for the last week in August on Chesters if anyone is interested, it is about as close to the back end on the beat you will ever get!... The following picture is taken at the 'Narrows' on Tyne Green at Hexham. On a personal note I think its now time to have an increase in fishing effort in an attempt to get that first fish of the season. Thought for a moment I had cracked it last weekend only to have a kelt splashing about on the end of my line for a few seconds..... Never mind theres always next time ! Water temperature at the begining of the week on the lower Tyne was upto 44 deg F.

08-04-04 An update on some Tyne catches as reported in the local news : There is no stopping the salmon catches on Bywell Syndicate's fishing on the River Tyne, with 57 now caught. Among the salmon was Ian Shuttleworth, from Stanhope, who landed two of 8lb on one day and followed that up with two more of 9lb and 8lb at Meg's Mill. All were caught on the fly. Wallsend angler George Nicholson caught a 17lb salmon at Castle, while Tynemouth rod Paul Ryder had fish of 9lb and 7lb to fly at Broomhaugh. Jonathon Lee, from Middlesbrough, caught a 9lb salmon at Island on fly and Ron Hebditch, from Durham, landed a sea-liced beauty of 23lb at Broomhaugh. Whickham angler George Pead caught an 11lb salmon on fly at Pipeline and Joe Hogg, from Wallsend, had one of 12lb at Broomhaugh. Guest angler Alec Mitchison caught an 8lb salmon on fly and lan Henderson, of Corbridge, got into a 12lb salmon at Upper Broomhaugh on spinner. Bywell angler Norman Pattinson caught salmon of 8lb at Beeches and 10lb at Megs Mill, followed by a 3lb 8oz sea-trout. Chris Raymos, from Harrogate, rounded of the Bywell catches with a 7lb 8oz fish caught at Broomhaugh spinning. Scott Everett, of Weardale, landed a 7lb fresh run salmon on a Flying C on Tyneside Anglers Syndicate waters at Wylam. Visiting angler Tom Rogers, from Chester, caught an 8lb salmon at Widehaugh on North Eastern Railways AC water. I heard of two fish caught below Hexham and a first salmon of the season from Haughton Castle on the North Tyne. A sea-trout was the first off the Chester beat on the North Tyne so fish are moving well upstream. A fresh run 5lb sea-trout was caught at Hagg Bank on the Federation waters on Monday and one member has had three salmon to 22lb off this stretch. Could I also draw everybodys attention to the following competition being run on the www.tynefishing.com/ website. This years competition is very simple to enter, all you have to do is send in your favourite photo of a salmon or sea trout catch from anywhere in the world. At the end of April the winner will be picked and the winners name announced. The prize is a days guided fishing in August, for two on Redeswood fishing for sea trout or salmon if conditions suit.

13-04-04 As usual thanks to Jonathan at www.tynefishing.com/This week so far Steven Hutchinson landed a 13lb salmon at Widehaugh to a silver Atlantic spoon on the North Eastern Railways water. Dougie Thompson from Rowlands Gill also fishing the railway water had a 14lb salmon to a spinner. At Wylam in the Stanley Burn pool Nick Chilton had a 20lb salmon on Tyneside Anglers Syndicate. A last minute report that today Mark Ridley has landed a salmon at Chester's and four salmon have been taken in the bridge pool at Hexham. Last but not least Douglas Beveridge fishing at Broomhaugh on Sunday landed a 10lb salmon on a stripped collie dog. Douglas also landed two fish of 12lb & 22lb respectively on the Dee. Obviously there are plenty of fish around now and i am getting reports of good runs being spotted at Tyne Green in Hexham, no dough heading towards Chester's and Riverdale residents can expect some action next week. The above photo shows the Railway Wall section of the river just above Ovingham. I personally had the pleasure of watching a very clean salmon caught and returned in Hexham bridge pool over the weekend. There were also a few other fish showing in the pool but I never spotted any jumping the bridge footings. Water temp on the lower Tyne last weekend was around 48 °F

19-04-04 After persistant heavy overnight rain the Lower Tyne is now a good five or so foot above normal height and very coloured. Looks promising for when it drops back down to a fishable level as the river was starting to get quite low and the extra water should hopefully bring some decent runs of fish in from the North Sea. The two pictures below show Wylam Bridge pool. The first was taken on saturday 17-04-04 and the second one today (monday 19-04-04).

North Tyne now dropped right off and almost back to summer lows. Chesters beat will be perfect tomorrow for our guests from Riverdale. The Rede is in A1 condition and is worth a look. More very heavy rain expected in the night! URL

An update on some Tyne catches as reported in the local news :
The Tyne continues to produce some lovely salmon and the Bywell Syndicate has now totalled 76 fish for the season.
Among their catches was a cracking 20lber caught by Paul Ryder of Tynemouth on fly.
Ian Shuttleworth had yet another fish of 10lb on fly.
Ian Henderson, of Corbridge, had an 8lb salmon on fly and John Little, of Kirk Mervington, landed fish of 16lb and 10lb on a size 10 Willie Gunn.
On Tyneside Anglers Syndicate water at Wylam, head bailiff Nick Chilton landed a 12lb salmon and then took a very fresh 6lb sea-trout on the fly at Stanley Burn.
The first salmon of the season was caught at Chesters, on the North Tyne, weighing 18lb and landed by Victor Farley, from Gloucester, taken at the Boat Pool on a Black and Gold Flying C.
Another salmon has been taken at Haughton Castle, while several have been caught in the Hexham area and also down at Corbridge.

23-04-04 Another update courtesy of www.tynefishing.com/As i said last week i expected some action from hotel residents fishing at Chester's this week. Victor Farley from Gloucester landed a cracking 18lb salmon from the boat pool on the lower beat to a black flying c. The Farley party were washed out on Monday but on Tuesday when the fish was landed the water although still a little high was dropping and clearing throughout the day. Several fish were seen running and fish were again seen on Wednesday. Yesterday however not one fish was seen and there is a feeling that the salmon have run through leaving an empty beat. This may of course be correct but the more likely answer to the lack of showing fish is the drop in water and the salmon just sitting in the faster water patiently waiting for the next spate. Further downstream at on the Bywell syndicate the tally for the season is up to 76 fish with Paul Ryder of Tynemouth landing a 20lb salmon to the fly, Ian Shuttleworth also had a 10lb salmon to the fly. Ian Henderson of Corbridge had an 8lb salmon to the fly and John Little landed two fish of 10lb & 16lb to a Willy Gun. On the T.A.S water at Wylam Nick Chilton had a 12lb salmon to a black and copper flying c and a 6lb sea trout to a Gary Dog. There are now plenty of fish being taken in the Hexham area and above and with a 10.5cmps release from the dam scheduled between 8am on Monday 26th until 8am Saturday May 1st, next week should see some good North Tyne sport. So has the removal of North Tyne drift nets made a difference to salmon runs on the Tyne?. Looking at figures released on the E.A. website from the Riding Mill fish pass the answer would have to be yes. In January 145 fish were recorded through the pass with the previous high a measly 36. For some reason there are no figures for February but 96 fish were counted in March the previous high for that month being 43.

An update of catches reported in the local fishing reports:
Salmon and sea-trout sport continues on our local rivers and, with the unsettled weather we have been having, levels have been up and down and this should encourage more fish in from the North Sea.
Prospects look good for the Bank Holiday weekend.
Bywell have now topped the 80 mark for the season so far. That man Ian Shuttleworth, from Stanhope, was catching again, this time salmon of 9lb and 7lb, both on fly.
Brian Hankin, of Bishop Auckland, had one of 8lb, also on fly at Broomhaugh.
John Witty, from Darlington, landed a lovely 11lb salmon on a size 12 Willie Gunn.
Down at Wylam, Nick Chilton, of Durham, landed sea-trout of 3lb 10oz and 2lb 9oz, both on Flying Cs from Tyneside Anglers Syndicate waters.
John Jamieson had a salmon of 11lb 8oz on a Red Flying C which was carefully returned at Stanley Burn.

Any advice would be great... I have recently joined the ferry hill club for sea trout on the wear. I desperately want to catch a north east salmon tho. We have water on the tidal stretch of the Tyne, what are the chances of getting a fish there? When is a good time go? What sort of conditions are suited to a tidal stretch?
I have been for a wonder down there, very big wide bit of river and looks good. Saw nothing but want to go again. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Would I be right in saying that the Ferryhill stretch on the tidal is in the Heddon on the Wall area ?
My advice would be to get yourself a tide table as you will find the majority of the fish will come up on the high tide. During low, warm water conditions there can be a large amount of fish lying in the tidal stretch from Wylam bridge pool down over, however this is also the time when we tend to suffer from fish deaths which were on a massive scale last season.
Does Ferryhill not also have access to a short stretch of the North Tyne at Bellingham ?

06-05-04 An update of information taken from www.tynefishing.com/ and local press reports : SALMON and sea-trout have been running the Tyne again this week and anglers have been reporting seeing plenty fish moving upstream. This is great news for Tyne anglers and good catches are likely in the weeks to come. Mark Oughtred of Tyneside Anglers Syndicate landed a magnificent brown trout of 4lb 8oz from the Pump House Pool at Wylam. The North Tyne has a constant 3cmps release from Kielder at the moment which is not as bad as the summer low level of 1.5cmps. Some rain on Monday night brought the river up 6 inches further on Tuesday but it soon dropped right back. The South Tyne has 6-8 inches on it and a fresh run, sea louced salmon of 9.5lb was landed today above Haltwhistle. Two residents fishing Chester's over the last couple of days have reported seeing a couple of fish and one running on the small rise yesterday but they have failed to catch.

Things seem to have gone a little quiet on the Tyne at present.
I was out talking to Graham Heaney down at Wylam Bridge Pool on sunday evening when there were a few old fish splashing about in the pool and again on monday. He commented on how few fish he has seen moving through and also how to date its been a rather poor May. He did however also take two salmon at the back end of last week.
The Fed water has been very quiet lately with very few anglers out. I have not spotted a fish moving through for a couple weeks now.
I will be updating with any catches listed in the local press within the next couple days.

An update of reported catches taken from a local press report :
Salmon and sea-trout have continued to enter the Tyne and catches made on the top main river beat Bywell Syndicate have now reached 93 fish for the season so far.
Among the recent catches was Ian Henderson of Corbridge with a 20lb fish on fly. Kevin Parker of Spennymoor with an 11lb fish on fly and Norman Pattinson of Bywell with two fish on fly weighing 8lb and 15lb. George Nicholson of Wallsend had a 11lb salmon an fly and then fish of 17lb and 16lb on spinner. John Little of Kirk Merrington landed a 7lb fish on fly while Joe Hogg of Wallsend had a 12lber on fly.
Graham Heaney of Wylam had two fish of 13lb at the weekend on Black and Gold Flying Cs, these follow up a cracking 25lber he caught in late April at Wylam.
Steven Hutchinson of Callerton Village had several salmon off the main river fishing North Eastern Railways AC waters and these included fish of 18lb, 14lb and 14lb, two on spinners and one on a Silver Stoats Tail tube fly.
Other fish reported were two for George Benson on fly at Chesters and two for Mark Ridley from the same beat. I also heard of sea-trout catches on Chipchase Castle and also fish landed at Nunwick, so they are now getting into the North Tyne in numbers.
Richard Phillipson of Haltwhistle landed a salmon of 11lb above Haltwhistle last week. This is the first fish from that area.
