I agree in principle with the stated sentiment from Hugh - going with the 'big boys' doesn't always guarantee good service and in many cases quite the opposite will be found.
What this boils down to is something quite simple: The larger you are, the more you can dictate you purchase prices from wholesalers or manufacturers The smaller you are, the more you struggle to compete with the cheaper prices of the 'big guys'
The value proposition of the 'big guys' is a large selection and good prices
The value proposition of the 'small guys' is that they will treat you with a more personalised service, giving free advice and dealing with any returns / complaints in a more timely and sincere manner...
at least that's what's supposed to happen
For the most part it stands true, but it seems like many large and small retailers haven't read the book - many small tackle dealers I've encountered are grumpy and don't deal well with returns etc. Other large player (Cabellas is a good example) go the extra mile to make your purchase go swiftly and with adequate support - have you tried their online instant message service - excellent!
That said, the reason the rule of thumb exists is because there is some truth to it - so if you were to generalise, the wee guys will treat you better than the big guys.
Also, if you don't value having a local tackle shop to browse and don't spend money there occasionally, the large dealer internet orders will be your only retail source in the future - and that can't be good.

Texxa Says "My only gripe about GAC is that they have supposedly bullied Airflo into making them sole distributor in the area, despite other medium sized retailers being their stockist before GAC. Smacks of restrictive practices to me."
I am now in the fishing tackle business and I can categorically say that you're very much mistaken in what you say re GAC being a sole distributor as above. Just ask Airflo.
