I know that many of you keep a written record of your fishing trips for future reference so what I would like to know is which of the various commercial 'Fly Fishing Log Books' on sale is generally considered to be the best? OK - I know a lots of you will suggest that a simple note book with lined pages is a better option because you can devise your own subject headings etc. However, I am conscious that Christmas is just around the corner and as I have decided to start keeping a log again I won't mind if someone buys one for me rather than the usual pair of socks! Any suggestions? Allrounder ;D

Hi Allrounder. This is not what you have described, but i think it will be better than what you are after. I was in a similar position a few years ago, in thinking of a ledger. I did a quite comprehensive (or so i as told) computer course and realised that i could make a ledger using M/Soft Access. The benefit is that you can store the input on hard drive and save onto floppy each time you do so. You can also print of copies as the season progresses or as one's paranoia sees fit. At the end of the season, copy save print etc and use the same programme again.
All the best Calson

Don't get something too big and precious. It stops you from writing in it spontaneously. I carry a little spiral bound notebook (Stockwell memobook 5"x3") Fits in a shirt pocket on a hot day, a small waistcoat pocket on a normal day and the zipped pocket inside the lining of my Barbour on a very wet day. The pen clips into the wire spiral and the whole lot fits in a sealable polythene bag.

If you want a pretty well produced hard bound book look at the classic library version.
If you want something for useful analysis, set something up on Excel. I did this for over a year and then discovered all sorts of useful information my using the 'charts' analysis and graphs on this programme.
Ultimately, it is down to the type of person you are, and the purpose of your log.

If you want something for useful analysis, set something up on Excel. I did this for over a year and then discovered all sorts of useful information my using the 'charts' analysis and graphs on this programme. For 5 years I have recorded each trip, weather, barometric pressure, water temp, flies, technique etc etc. All analysis shows only one constant. I'm a rubbish fisherman. It has the following apt verse on the front page: I thought that I would keep a book And in it I would write, A note of all the fish I took The date, the bait, the bite.
Now what I took to be success Before my book began, Was but a failure to assess My memory's élan.
As more I write, so more I wish My book has never been, For now I see my worthy fish Are few and far between.
And though the glory of the past Lived only in my mind, It helped to soothe each hopeless cast, When fortune was unkind

Thanks for this, guys! ;D Using Excel or Access is so obvious, I couldn't see it! I never even considered using a webpage but am considering it now as I have been mightily impressed by the examples I've seen. I've now dropped the idea of suggesting a fishing log book for a Christmas present and instead I am now directing friends and relations towards these reprinted classics of angling literature at Coch-Y-Bonddu books www.anglebooks.com/ie A Man May Fish by Kingsmill-Moore The Fishermans Bedside Book by 'BB' Sea Trout Fishing by Falkus Suddenly I'm looking forward to Christmas again! Allrounder ;D

aliferste Like your website. I take it you dont control the adverts for Jamie Oliver books and bargain salmon on e-bay! LOL I had not noticed that. The adverts are picked up by google and are tailored to what I am writing about. In this case the google bot though as I was writing a lot about Jamie Oliver and farmed salmon then that was an appropriate advert. I will change it when I get home from work..... Incidentally if you click on those ads I earn around 10p for each ad. Very good for those out there that actually have websites
