Hi Guys
A timely post has just reminded me that I got one back in Jan 05. How does the next stage progress, do you get a letter from TF?
Thanks Kenny

Yes, I got one last year and this year. Both flukes, one of them while reeling in.
You get invited to a qualifier on the venue for which you get the badge, the fishery determines the rules and the winner goes through.
Rib did it on simple total weight last year and I came stone cold last ;D
This year, it's Ringstead, so no idea what the rules will be yet.

Fished a "fish off" at Stone bridge in North Yorks yesterday, it was a really close match between myself and "Troutmasters Stalwart" Laurence Robb. By lunchtime Laury had 10 and I was on 7 fish, however I managed to pull myself back into contention and by the last peg we were on honours even with 11 fish apiece. In the last 5 mins my buzzer was snaffled and I landed (very carefully) the match winning fish. My commiserations to Laury but he has a few more qualifiers to do so I am sure he will make it to the final. In the last 3 years I have finished 11th, 3rd and last year 2nd (behind the very worthy winner Derek Keenan) in the final, so I have got to keep trying to win this prestigious (and very enjoyable) competition, Hopefully I will see some of you guys at the final in May. What a fabulous story Nick. A fabulous story of modesty. What an angler you are.
Have you finished blowing it yet?
Your own trumpet I mean.
Let's hope for the good of angling you go on to win the whole comp.

Hi Dog Thanks for the kind comments , I dont detect a little sarcasm there do I ? Apologies if I have misread the post no offence either intended or taken ! Not to worry, if you attend the "Go-Fishing" show at the NEC in March , call in at the Trout Fisherman stand and I will show you (or any of the forum members) some of the patterns and techniques which have served me well in the Troutmasters competition. I am not one for secrets so if anybody is fortunate enough to qualify for the final , come and have a chat, I will tell you what I know. This sport, even in competition is all the better for being shared with likewise individuals, but be warned dont show me any secret patterns as I will tell the world !!! Nick

What a generous offer Nick. Why don't you post the methods, techniques and flies up on here? I know that a lot of people fish the small stillwaters, so would be interested.
Personally, I don't like the small ponds, so probably wouldn't find your patterns or techniques that have served you well in the Troutmasters all that interesting.
I am sure many would though. They do sound incredible.

Hi Dog I am not one for secrets so if anybody is fortunate enough to qualify for the final , come and have a chat, I will tell you what I know. Not sure if I would call Grafham (the venue for the final) a small pond Personally I would always find it worthwhile listening to the methods used by someone who is often successful on such a water (or almost any water) and adapting those ideas that I feel appropriate? But then pehaps its just that the fishing knowledge I posess is just so much less than that of your good self.

Yeah Cumbrian, you're probably right. Fingers crossed then that we all get to hear about these techniques eh? We can only aspire to be that great can't we? Ah, if only..........

Dog - With all due respect, why read and post in a Troutmasters thread when you have no intention of ever fishing to enter? Your post is typical of the way in which healthy conversation deteriorates so quickly on this board. NickH's comments were exactly the type I was after when I started the thread, and his kind offers of advice and patterns certainly added value. I've no intention of becoming embroiled in mud slinging so wind your neck in.

Cidertastic et al (except Dog) Thanks for the kind comments, The attitude of Dog is precisely why I dont do much posting on this forum, no matter how hard you try to help or advise, someone always seems to reply with derisive comments, unfortunately the few spoil it for the masses (look at Berlin, Carl is a font of knowledge and the forum seems to have lost his inputs now). If any anglers are interested I do write regular features for Trout Fisherman magazine (I can hear the groans already). Please give it another chance, why not take advantage of the 2 for 1 offer on tickets and come to the "Go-Fishing" show and tell me personally what you think, so we can try to improve things further. The magazine is been relaunched with the next issue and I have submitted a fairly detailed piece on dry fly techniques (no its not just another "remember to Gink and sink" article) If you think it is crap then please tell me constructively (it may even start a debate) . Just while we (I) are on the subject of articles would anyone be interested in an extended feature covering the buildup/background and coverage of one of the major International fly fishing comps, I am fishing in the Spring International in Ireland this year ;D and wondered if it might be of general interest, if so I might take my notebook and camera ! Yes, that would make a good article. Seriously. They do not get anywhere near enough coverage.
