I once was partnered with the RAF, Welsh fellow on Rutland. Can’t remember his name but a really nice bloke. Anyway. He could rolly polly and still hold the rod in his casting hand. Point being it’s difficult if not impossible to ban. I personally don’t see a problem with it. It’s just another retrieve. Some days it works and some days it doesn’t. Colin

If he could roly poly with the rod still in his hand I do not think it would be against the rules. Think the logic of the rule is that the rod should be held in the hand. My understanding of the roly poly is that the rod is not held in your hand, both hands are retrieving the line. Part of the problem is that if you do not need to hold the rod in your hand whilst retrieving where does the rule stop. Underarm, between feet, tripod on side of boat etc. Back to the line in the sand has to be drawn somewhere. The arguments dont stop, they just move on a step (or pull). Fished in an international on L Conn with Dave (B...?) who apparently invented the roly poly and his description was underarm.

Yup as confusing as ever. But that is flyfishing! For those that have a good dexterity the roly poly can be achieved by holding the rod in the hand. Allowing roly poly helps the less fit or ailment bound to compete against the super fit ripper. The method is associated with ripping - Usually. But it can be fished fast and slow. It's a retrieve and traditionally thats what we can do with flies, Isn't it? Chuck 'em out and get 'em back repeat as often as you like. Why not allow it and have speed restrictions? Imagine Gatso cameras situated on reservoirs or bailiffs with speed guns. Buy as said it is a method that on its day works a treat but other days......? I'm for it.
