are there any [packaged tour ]operators offing 7 nights in sol hotel cayo largo David try Planet Flyfishing in Paris...they are cheaper than Go Fishing Worldwide.....When my wife and I went to Cayo Largo just after it was opened Anna came out in the boat for three days and absolutely loved it even though she wasn't fishing...frankly there is not alot for women to do outside the resorts in Cuba and as much as she loved the beach she went a little stir crazy after a six days.

re www.cubamania.com/cuba/showthread.php?t=15214Just got back from Cayo Coca and spent 3 days bonefishing. Went out with a guide named Juanito the first day and hooked 3 nice bones on crazy charlies. Went a second time with The Ranchon and boated around alot but got 5 really nice bonefish again crazy charlies seem to be the fly of choice. The third time I walked by myself past the Melia to a large flat about 1km east of the resort and spent my last afternoon. I saw 5 bonefish and got to cast at a couple but no hook up's, still a very enjoyable afternoon. Juanito can be found in the lobby of the Melia or the Sol most mornings and The Ranchon can be contacted thru a Cubanacan office. Hope this helps. Mikey ----- Original Message ----- From: Fish Tales Fly Shop To: david armes Sent: Tuesday, January 24, 2006 12:40 AM Subject: Re: Cayo Coco David, Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I must have missed your email just at Christmas time there. The shop was very busy. Anyway, thanks for passing the link on to the forum. I read some interesting stuff about down there. There always seems to be this battle between our friends at the Ranchon and Juanito and the other fellow he is apparently using. All I know is that I have only ever used the guys from the "Ranchon" on Cayo Paredon and the only time things got screwed up at all was when Juanito was involved from a "managers" perspective. What it really boils down to is I have no idea how internal Cuban politics work between two seperate companies I just go to fish and I have always had a good time. The good news from Cayo Coco from clients who just came back a week ago from there is that the pricing structure has returned to a more realistic level. The Ranchon guiding operation is $200 Cuban Convert. Pesos for one or two people in the boat for the day and includes pick up at your hotel. Generally, we can organize the first day you want to go out and any additional days you may want to go you just arrange that yourself once you are in contact with them. A standard day is getting picked up at 7:30-8am and then it takes about 50min to drive out to Paredon where the boats are. It's best to bring some lunch along as the guys only have drinks which they sell for $1 a piece in the boats. You will be gone all day and most likely wont be back to your hotel until around 6pm. The only one who speaks English is Miguel the manager. Reinaldo does speak some English but the other two basically none. You just pay them cash at the end of the day. We usually end up tipping $20 - $30 Cuban Pesos for the day. Let me know and I can give you a bunch of very specific info about where to fish on your own as well as what to expect for a day of fishing with the guides. Hope this helps. Jan Hot weather certainly but not savage...its in the early seventies at present. The fishing in Cayo Paradon is good and I saw the biggest school of Permit I have ever seen, but very spooky. Its a very cheap week if you get the accomodation of teletext....we booked with the co-op....excellent service. Mick

mick,
we spent some time digging through the hotel feedback and decided to stick with mexico and ascension bay this time - the reports on the hotels and the strength of the wind in december/january put me off a bit, and the wife decided that she didnt fancy it -also it was just as dear as mexico over christmas - and the cuba south coast fishign is just too expensive for me.
cheers

I'm thinking of a jaunt to Cayo Largo, but flights are difficult from the North of England if you want to avoid the Heathrow/Gatwick nightmare. However I've just come across a Canadian website offering 7 nights all-inclusive at Club Sol for CAN $1162 out of Toronto, and Toronto is reasonably cheap and easy from Manchester. Can anyone offer any advice on booking guides from Casa Batida Club once you arrive in the resort?

I go with First Choice, 5* all-inclusive @ the Melia Cayo Coco... two weeks for £1000, and organise the fishing when i arrive. This gives me more flexibility, and i don't lose any deposits through poor weather. The only contact i had with Juanito, is on arrival at the hotel I ask the reception to contact him (although a few of the poolside bar-staff are his buddies, and can also contact him.) There is a fishing guide working from Cayo Guillermo, also called Orlando, who the receptionist will try to put you in touch with. Don't.... he does not have much interest in your catching fish, just interested in $$$s. Ask specifically for Juanito Araguez, and he'll be there the following day. Sorry i can't help further with contact details Andy Original Message ----- From: Damaisy Abreu <ventas1.mcc@solmeliacuba.com> <melia.cayo.coco@solmelia.com> Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2006 6:44 PM Subject: Reply Enquiry - cost Activities etc availble W/C 12 March 2006 ;D at last!! got up to date contact details for Juan Araguez > Dear David, > > Thank you very much for your e-mail. > Attached you may find useful information about our hotel. > About tours, excursion or activity outside the hotel contact your Thomas Cook representative in Cayo Coco (adaviotc@enet.cu or rsaviotc@enet.cu). > Havanatur Representative E-mail: lcamposv@cimex.com.cu You may contact Juan Araguez there. > > Have a nice day! > > Warm regards from Cayo Coco, > > Damaisy Abreu Víctores > Jefa de Ventas/ Sales Manager > Melia Cayo Coco > Jardines del Rey > Ciego de Avila, Cuba > Tel: (53) 33 301180 > Fax: (53) 33 301380 // 301195
